Gumbo at Dooky Chase's airport location in New Orleans

Gumbo at Dooky Chase's airport location in New Orleans
The last time we spent Thanksgiving in New Orleans, we enjoyed the brunch at Dooky Chase's. When we had to fly back home, we noticed there is a new, second location at the Louis Armstrong airport. Turns out this is about as good as any airport food you are likely to have.

Be sure to check out my review of the brunch at the original Dooky Chase's location.

Bargain Po Boys at Captain Sal's Seafood and Chicken in New Orleans

Looking for a bargain on a tasty po boy in New Orleans? Then be sure to stop by Captain Sal's on St. Claude in Bywater. You get your second po boy for half price. And these sandwiches are big, too. Each one is cooked to order so plan on waiting a few minutes for your grub.

There's also chicken, seafood, and Chinese at Captain Sal's. We're going to try them the next time we're in town.

The day we were there, the place got busy as soon as the door opened up. Lots of people were picking up po boys to go (probably for the Saints game later that day).

Check out the menu on Captain Sal's web site.

If you're on the other side of town, be sure to check out the roast beef, firecracker shrimp, and catfish po boys at Parasol's.

The spicy mango wings were excellent. Crispy, a little spicy hot, and juicy on the inside. It's served with avocado dip.

St. Roch Market opened recently, and is home to many diverse places to eat, from BBQ and Mexican to coffee and Haitian. There's plenty of indoor seating, and a patio out front. It's in the Marigny area, between the French Quarter and Bywater. St. Roch Market provides a space for many food vendors to share a common kitchen, giving them a chance to start a business where they might not otherwise be able to. It's a great way to enjoy a diversity of choices in a single vibrant space.

St. Roch is near our vacation house, so we've been stopping by each day for coffee and smoothies. Today we tried the Skinny Green (kale, pineapple, mango, banana, and almond milk) which I liked a lot. It reminded me of the veggie smoothies at Jiggle Berry in Amarillo.

Vegan smoothies at Smoothie King

Mango Kale
Sunwarrior® Raw Plant-Based Protein, Kale, Mango Juice Blend, Bananas, Apple Juice, Almonds
The kale flavor comes through with plenty of sweetness from the fruit. This reminded me of the smoothies I've had in San Diego and at Jiggle Berry in Amarillo. It's non-dairy and nutritious.
Nutty Super Grain
Sunwarrior® Raw Plant-Based Protein, Almond Milk, Peanut Butter, Super Grains, 100% Cocoa, Apple Juice, Bananas
The nutty flavor really comes through in this one, and it's definitely a meal replacement.
Dark Chocolate Banana
Sunwarrior® Raw Plant-Based Protein, 100% Cocoa, Bananas, Açaí Sorbet
This vegan smoothie is chock full of chocolaty flavor. The banana and sorbet sweeten it up.
Drive-thru Smoothie King in Picayune, Mississippi

I tried these vegan smoothies in San Antonio, Picayune (Mississippi) and New Orleans, but you can get these vegan smoothies at any Smoothie King. Check out the Smoothie King web site and the Smoothie King page on Facebook for locations. And of course Smoothie King has plenty of other types of smoothies, so check them out.
