I got lucky! I was in West Orange, NJ to visit the Edison Museum and it's around the corner from a unique sausage treat. But that wasn't the lucky part. The lucky part was arriving on a Tuesday which is Fat Tuesday at Jimmy Buff's Italian Style Jersey dogs -- double the sausage for free!

As luck would have it, the hotel I was staying at in Nashville was right around the corner and in walking distance to some of the best (and unique) fried chicken in the country. And it was a good thing I walked because Prince's is so popular you will have a hard time finding a place to park.

I'm firmly in the midwest on my return home to California from a few weeks on the East coast and Philadelphia to visit my daughter at college. It seems like many of the restaurants in Lancaster County's Amish Country are buffets, and I wasn't up for that much food today. Instead, I tracked down a place where the locals eat, and it seems like I was the only tourist there. I took a detour off the Natchez Trace Parkway and headed to Vicksburg for some hot tamales. 

I found Original Solly's Hot Tamales in my Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America's Two-Lane Highways. This is a big book with 11 great road trips, with what to see and where to eat along the way.

Solly's tamales are just right. The beef is seasoned well with just enough heat to make them spicy but not going off the charts in terms of heat. They're already made so you don't wait long to start enjoying them. And they are very reasonably priced. Buy them in bunches of three.

I also got the frito pie. It's exactly what you think it is with the tamale beef piled on Fritos, with cheddar cheese and salsa. I really liked this a lot. Such a simple thing but the spicy beef makes it delicious.

The take-out business seems to do do well here, too. Just while I was enjoying my meal, several people came into order tamales by the dozen to go. You can even get them frozen.

TIP: There's a lot of history in Vicksburg so be sure to visit the cannons on the banks of the Mississippi and the historic downtown. (Even Solly's is historic -- it's been there since 1939!)

Sometimes it's fun to just be a tourist, and what's more touristy than taking the double-decker sightseeing bus? As I rode around downtown San Antonio, suddenly a bright pink pig came into view. WARNING -- spicy (but delicious) food ahead!

On Burbank Blvd. in Burbank, CA is Chili John's as seen on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. You can't miss it right on the corner with a big sign. You walk in and there's only counter seating, and the counter is a big horseshoe around vats of chili and dogs. We went last night, and the owner greeted us in a very friendly manner despite arriving near to closing time.
